Filmmaker Mike Nichols directed 'The Graduate' and 'The Birdcage' and the Broadway musical 'Spamalot, and he's the subject of the new PBS American Masters documentary. Nichols spoke to Fresh Air in 2001.  Carol Burnett was among the first women to host a TV variety show. This weekend, she'll receive a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
